Recognising the critical need for digital proficiency in today's economy, the University of Sheffield and Siemens have significantly expanded their longstanding partnership with the creation of the Digital Innovation Zone (DIZ). Located in the vibrant Engineering Heartspace of the iconic Sir Frederick Mappin Building, the DIZ is designed to accelerate digitalisation, cultivate advanced digital skills, and foster a collaborative environment for technology and knowledge exchange.
I think being the Siemens Intern and managing the DIZ is definitely going to be helpful for my future. We have quite a range of students visiting the space and not just engineering students!"

The DIZ provides students with invaluable practical experience. This state-of-the-art facility, a joint investment by the University and Siemens, is also a hub for local businesses and collaborative partnerships. The DIZ is Siemens' only investment of its kind anywhere in the world. It features:
- Interactive digital demonstrators showcasing the power of live stream data analytics and visualisation
- High-performance student workstations equipped with Siemens software and advanced Computer Aided Design (CAD) software
- Platforms for exploring Edge Computing and Digital Simulation technologies.
- A ground-breaking Digital Twin of the Diamond building's Pilot Plant
- 3D printing.
The DIZ offers transformative opportunities:
- Empowering students: Run by students, for students. They will gain direct access to real-time data from operational assets, alongside a physical space designed to encourage collaboration, creativity, and innovation.
- Advancing academic research: Academics will have the opportunity to collaborate with businesses, Siemens, and their partners, driving research and development in crucial areas such as data analytics, visualisation, and cybersecurity.
- Driving regional economic growth: Businesses within the Sheffield City Region can leverage the DIZ's resources and expertise to develop innovative digital solutions, addressing industry-specific challenges and shape regional growth through the application of Internet of Things and other digital technologies.
"Working with the other advisors is fantastic. We're a close-knit team, sharing knowledge and discovering more efficient ways of doing things. The interaction with students is equally exciting. They challenge us, suggesting new approaches and sparking fresh ideas!"
