The Spanish Play
Each year the Department of Hispanic Studies, in association with the student led Sociedad Hispánica, put on a Spanish play in which both staff and students collaborate. The department has organised anual theatrical performances since the 1950s. This was first set up by Fernando Moragas who organised a Velada Teatral in which the Departmental choir would perform Spanish songs followed by a one-act play in Spanish. In the 1970s, as student numbers grew, the department began to use the Drama Studio to put on full-length plays for 3 nights, aimed partly at growing numbers of A-level students. Past productions have included 'El alcalde de Zalamea' and 'Las bicicletas son para el verano'. The play is open to the general public and we especially encourage school pupils who are learning Spanish to attend. The Valada/play has always been supported by the Herbert Hughes Memorial Trust Fund. Click on the links below to see forthcoming productions and photos.
