Ivan holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge. The main focus of his research is the emergence and persistence of regional development disparities within capitalist countries, and how they can be overcome, with the UK as the main case study. In addition, focusing on Scotland as the main example, he looked at how regional development disparities can create inter-regional economic conflicts, which, under certain circumstances, can become the basis for separatism. Ivan joined the University of Sheffield Information School in May 2018, to work as a Research Associate on the Regional Technology Foresight project.
