Staff bid farewell to inspirational colleague

Journalism Studies staff have paid tribute to visiting tutor Paul Pugh after attending his funeral earlier this month.

The Department of Journalism Studies building at 9 Mappin Street, Sheffield.

An experienced freelance graphic designer, Paul had worked with the school since 2002, tutoring students in design and page layout.

His career took him to London and to local newspapers in Essex. He also worked as a principal designer for Sheffield City Council, where he designed the enduring 'city in the hills' logo recognised by hundreds of thousands of Sheffielders.

Mourners at Paul's funeral included current Journalism Studies staff Lisa Bradley and David Holmes, as well as former colleagues Bob Bennett and Jonathan Foster, who had both worked closely with Paul over many years.

Lisa said: "Paul was very clearly a much loved father, husband, brother, son and friend. He was a talented graphic designer, then newspaper designer and eventually teacher. He was a father of six children, a keen morris dancer, photographer and thrived in the outdoors – kind, patient, spiritual and full of compassion and understanding.

"I only worked with Paul for a year, but I very much wished I had had the time to know him better. He was warm, easy to be with and very patient with the students. He was hard-working, dedicated and a very unique man."

Flair for design

Joint head of school Professor Marie Kinsey added: "Paul's contribution to the department was extremely valued by staff and students.

"His flair for page design helped enormously in getting students to understand the principles of good layout and eye-grabbing headlines. He will be missed very much."

The School of Journalism, Media and Communication extends condolences and deepest sympathy to Paul's family and friends. Staff have made a donation in his memory to the Adventure Fund run by the Outward Bound Trust, which helps young people from diverse backgrounds to undertake life-changing outdoor adventures.
