International Journalism Week

International Journalism Week (or IJW) is a programme of events organised every year by the Journalism Studies Department at the University of Sheffield. Each year focuses on a key theme and includes panels, talks from external speakers, workshops and competitions for students.

About the NCTJ

What is the NCTJ?

The National Council for the Training of Journalists, or NCTJ, is a charity and a professional awarding organisation. Their qualifications are vital for anyone hoping to work in a newsroom. We are currently the only Russell Group university with an NCTJ accreditation.

About the qualification

You will graduate with 2 qualifications: a journalism degree and an NCTJ diploma. This award ensures you are newsroom-ready and qualified in shorthand, media law and court reporting, data journalism and more.

Shorthand

Shorthand is a necessary requirement for all journalists, as it remains illegal to bring recording devices into court - and it's impossible to write fast enough by hand! You will be taught shorthand from scratch, and have the opportunity to take both the 60 and 100 words-per-minute exams as you progress through the degree.

The Wave

In The Wave, you will have access to state-of-the art facilities, study spaces and an Italian-inspired cafe, all in one beautiful, 'net-zero' space. 

Tailored employability and wellbeing support will be available through the Cornerstone facility, which is open Monday-Friday.
