Chris Lewis from Extreme presents plans for the £22.5m development of the Sheffield Ski Village to Landscape Planning students

Students on the Urban Landscape Planning module - part of MA Landscape Architecture - received the presentation from Chris Lewis, to help with their own work developing proposals for a new type of urban park in the wider Parkwood Springs area and the former ski village.

Chris’ presentation was a fantastic opportunity for our students to get an insight in how projects of this scale are set up and managed and it led to lively discussions.

Module lead Professor Eckart Lange said: “Chris’ presentation was a fantastic opportunity for our students to get an insight in how projects of this scale are set up and managed and it led to lively discussions.”

Chris is Property Development Director at Extreme Destinations, a globally operating enterprise that sets up large leisure and recreation facilities. Their proposals will breathe new life into the site which, before it burnt down in 2012, produced a number of the UK’s most successful Winter Olympians.

Extreme’s plans include a new ski slope and lifts as well as a wide range of recreation opportunities, including an indoor skydiving centre, revamped mountain bike trails and E-Gaming Centre.

The Department of Landscape Architecture’s Urban Landscape Planning module gives students experience of landscape planning at different scales and benefits from the valuable input from the Friends of Parkwood Springs group.

Chris will return to the Department at the completion of the module, to view students’ proposals and provide expert feedback. Construction of the new Sheffield Ski Village is scheduled to start in 2019.
