Cathy is a chemist by background and works in the Climate Science Team of the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, where she leads on greenhouse gas removal technologies, and works on the UK’s contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Her other civil service roles have included commissioning climate research from the Met Office Hadley Centre, managing the procurement of a satellite instrument, writing the DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) Earth Observations Strategy, contributing to the first National Adaptation Programme and two years in the Technical Support Unit for IPCC Working Group I – Physical Science.

Before joining the civil service she worked for British Gas, doing research (for which she was awarded her PhD) and environmental monitoring, and then in environmental consultancy, working for a variety of industrial sectors and co-writing the world’s first environmental management systems standard.
