MEC445: Industrial Applications of Finite Element Analysis

Finite element modelling is widely used in industry to solve an endless number of practical problems, often involving non-linearity and dynamic loading. This module will teach how to robustly develop such models through industry-relevant projects using the commercial software Ansys.

Module Description
The module aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the principles of finite element modelling and its application to solve industrial engineering problems. A set of industry-relevant problems will be provided to students along with experimental results for model validation. Students will be allocated one of their preferred projects and will have to devise a modelling strategy to solve their particular problem. Knowledge will be drawn from lectures introducing the theory behind finite element modelling of dynamic problems for modal and transient analyses, non-linear problems including contact, material behaviour and large deformation as well as fracture.
Required Prior Knowledge
If you haven't already learnt about the following subjects, you will struggle to pass this module:
- Linear elastic finite element analysis (FEA) including basic understanding of the theory
- Basic experience of using any FEA software (e.g. ANSYS, ABAQUS, FUSION360, etc...)
- Basic vibration theory including the concepts of natural frequency and mode shape if selecting a dynamics-related project

Assessment Methods
- 100% on coursework through an individual report (3000 words)
Module Aims
- Provide students with an industrially relevant application to be modelled using advanced finite element analysis.
- Develop new knowledge of finite element modelling, beyond linear static analysis, to solve dynamics and non-linear problems.
- Develop robust skills in conceptualising real engineering problems and devising a reliable finite element modelling strategy using ANSYS.
- Develop skills in validating advanced finite element simulations.
