Department wins Gold at The Green Impact Awards 2016

Materials Green Impact Team

On Friday 20th May, the Materials Science and Engineering Green Impact Team received the Gold Green Impact Award at the University Green Impact Sustainability Showcase. Held at Firth Hall, the afternoon celebrated the achievements of both students and staff for their dedication and innovation in developing a more sustainable working environment.

The Materials Green Impact Team (Lauren Ashton, Andy Keating, Lisa Hollands and Vanessa Singleton) has been able to build upon the success of previous years achievements; the Bronze Award in 2011/2012 and 2014/2015, and the Innovation Award in 2014/2015 in recognition of the Department's extensive progress in developing more sustainable working conditions and the renovation of the Sir Robert Hadfield Building green roof space.

The team received Gold for 2015/2016 in recognition of the ongoing activities put on throughout the year to inspire both students and staff to consider the environmental impact of small everyday behaviour changes, such as recycling and housing indoor plants. Events included Fairtrade Fortnight, Recycling Drive, and Biodiversity Week.

The Kroto Research Building, sister site to the Department, received the Green Impact Silver Award and Gold Laboratory Award, with special recognition to Vanessa Singleton (Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Laboratory Manager) for her work in reinstating the green impact initiative in the building and ensuring environmental performance in the laboratories.

The team was also actively involved in the planning and running of the Engineering at Sheffield Fairtrade Breakfast. The Faculty, and Departments involved, were awarded the Special Award - Innovation for Engagement in recognition of the commitment to engage with both staff and students to raise awareness of green impact.
