Profile

Dr Hui Long joined the University of Sheffield as a Reader in 2012. She was a senior lecturer and lecturer at Durham University where she worked from 2003 to 2012. Dr Long received her BEng, MSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Chongqing University in China. She worked as a lecturer and an associate professor in the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical Transmissions in the same University for nine years. From 1996 to 2003, she worked as a research associate and research fellow at the University of Strathclyde, the University of Wales Swansea and Brunel University, funded by EU and EPSRC research projects.

Areas of Research

Dr Hui Long specialises in mechanics of materials, contact mechanics and engineering failures. Her current research is centred on two broad areas, wind energy and manufacturing technology.

In wind energy, the current research areas include:

  • Wind turbine gearbox reliability and premature failures of gears and bearings;
  • Wind turbine drivetrain dynamic load modelling under transient operating conditions;
  • Probabilistic failure analysis using SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) data;
  • Damage analysis of surface micro-pitting & subsurface white etching cracking of gears and bearings.

In manufacturing, the work is centred on advanced metal forming technologies:

  • Metal spinning process development and optimisation to prevent material processing failures;
  • Incremental sheet forming process development for improved formability and precision;
  • Non-linear finite element analysis and modelling of metal forming and welding processes;
  • Uncertainty modelling of metal forming process conditions to control geometrical accuracy.
