With official status in 20 countries, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world. It is the major language in Latin America, alongside Portuguese, and is also an increasingly important language in the USA.

Languages for All Modules

General language modules are open to all students (for credits or not), members of staff, and members of the public. They aim to develop language competence and cultural knowledge for professional and recreational purposes through small group weekly classes and guided independent learning. When enrolling, all modules are worth 10 credits or equivalent.

Beginner

.You have no previous experience of learning the language

Post-Beginner

You have some basic experience of learning the language and aren't a complete beginner.

Intermediate

You have studied the language for one to two years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good GCSE, and can interact with 'friendly' native speakers in common, expected situations.

Higher Intermediate

You have studied the language for two to three years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good AS-level, and can interact with some ease with 'friendly' native speakers in common, expected situations.

Advanced

You have studied the language for some years, possibly have (the equivalent of) a good A-Level, and can interact quite naturally with native speakers in standard situations. You want to gain in fluency and accuracy in more advanced situations.

Higher Advanced

You are an advanced user of the language and have had opportunities to demonstrate your effective communicative skills in the field. You want to gain in sophistication and accuracy in specific situations.

Proficient

You may not be a near-native speaker yet, but you have a solid experience of interacting with such speakers, linguistically and culturally, and you need to hone your skills for specific purposes.

Higher Proficient

You may not be a near-native speaker yet, but you have a solid experience of interacting with such speakers, linguistically and culturally, and you need to hone your skills for specific purposes.

Degrees with Spanish in the School of Languages and Cultures 

These modules are for undergraduate students undertaking a languages degree with the School of Languages and Cultures.

They are intended to build your proficiency in Spanish over the years up to a near-native speaker level, taking into account any previous experience of the language you may have, whilst supporting your study of Spanish culture in other modules.

STEM Degrees with Spanish

These modules are for STEM students undertaking a degree with Spanish or with Study Abroad.

In addition to general language modules, they include specialized modules preparing for, or accompanying the Year Abroad, and enabling you to become proficient users of Spanish in your own STEM subject.

Modules in brackets come in addition to the other modules for students taking 30 to 40 credits of language per year. The language Co-ordinator will advise you on which one(s) to take depending on your degree.
