The University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union has been awarded the Whatuni Student Choice Award 2022 for Best Students’ Union, for the fifth year running.

The awards were a triple celebration with the University also ranked in the top three UK universities in the University of the Year category and second in the Student Life category.

The Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) are the only annual awards based solely on the views of students studying in the UK. Every year Whatuni gathers around 30,000 verified reviews, helping prospective students make the decision about where to study.

The University was nominated in five out of 12 categories including; University of the Year and best university for Postgraduate, International, Students Union and Student Life.

Evie Croxford, Sheffield Students’ Union President 2021-22, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to the students who took the time to review us.

“It’s our students who make Sheffield Students’ Union into the wonderful community it is, and I’m so proud that we continue to get recognised for that on a national level year after year!”

The Students’ Union, located at the heart of the University campus, is at the centre of the student experience. As well as being home to over 350 student-led societies, the University of Sheffield's Students’ Union offers shops, venues for live entertainment and club nights, places to eat, drink, study and socialise, a nursery and a 400-seat cinema. It provides a hub where students from across the world can come together to try new activities, access advice and support, make friends and try something new.

It offers committees to support specific student groups including LGBT+, BME, disabled and international students as well as support for students who want to campaign on issues important to them. It is also home to the award-winning Student Advice Centre, which offers information and advice to students.

The WUSCAs, now in their 10th year, were announced at a special ceremony in Canary Wharf, London this week (24 May 2022) to celebrate the hard work of higher education providers across the UK to create the best environment for their students.

Dan Barcroft, Director of Student Recruitment, Marketing and Admissions, said: “At the University of Sheffield we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming campus for all so it's fantastic to know our current students regard us so highly and are keen to share their great experiences with prospective students.

“We are delighted to once again be ranked number one for our Students' Union which is at the very heart of student life and provides a place where students can take part in new activities, make friends and access advice and support.

“Being recognised with a bronze medal in the University of the Year category and second place in the Student Life category is a real honour - especially as it has been determined by over 30,000 student reviews from across the UK.”

This latest award for the Students’ Union comes off the back of being voted the number one students’ union in the 2021 Student Crowd University Awards and number one in the UK for 2020 by Student Hut.
