Hyperpolarised gas ventilation MRI detects early lung disease in children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

Hyperpolarised gas MRI uses inhaled gases to directly image the airspaces of the lungs.

We studied a group of children with CF with very mild lung disease, and found that ventilation MRI was able to detect lung abnormalities which were not detected by other clinical tests (CT, lung clearance index and spirometry).

Alongside this group of children with CF we studied healthy children without lung problems, who all had normal ventilation MRI.

This work was recently published in Thorax, and we are excited that the editors also chose to write about our work.
