Quick guide to Sheffield

A major city with a strong sense of community. A cultural centre on the edge of the Peak District national park. Sheffield is a special place, a city that leaves its mark. Its landscape, people and culture will influence you more than you can ever imagine.

A city like no other

Sheffield has everything you’d expect to find in a major city and more. We've got all the usual big city attractions - supermarkets, all your favourite chains, loads of cinemas to choose from, high street shopping - but Sheffield offers so much more than that.

Our students are always shouting about Sheffield. They discover a city that's safe, affordable, creative and green. They set up home here and fall in love with the place. Though it’s big, it’s also pretty easy to get around. You can walk across the city centre, from the train station to our campus, in about 20 minutes. Or you can just hop on the tram.

The city is bursting with creativity. There's a thriving grassroots creative arts community, a multicultural population, hundreds of niche independent shops, the best pubs in Britain and a legendary music scene.

We have more parks and woodlands than any other UK city, striking Victorian and modern architecture, big shopping at Meadowhall, champion sport facilities and stylish restaurants.

Urban farms, secret parties, Supertrams, seven hills, five rivers and four and a half million trees - choose the University of Sheffield and you’ll discover an extraordinary place to live and study.

Sheffield has very quickly become home for me. The people here are so friendly and always willing to go out of their way to help you.

With students making up a quarter of Sheffield’s population, it is very much a student city. As a result, there are so many activities catered to young adults ranging from music festivals, events to nights out. And of course, we can’t forget all the student discounts.

The city is very international with a variety of international supermarkets and restaurants serving food from all parts of the world – so you are never short of a new cuisine to try.

The Peak District is literally right at your doorstep. It is the perfect escape from the city and a great place to visit to exercise and destress.
