Our research highlighted the value of online health forums for people living with health conditions, but we also found that people may not be aware, or be signposted to forums.

This finding was confirmed by engagement activities with members of the public and health professionals, who participated in events to find out about what it is like to be part of an online health forum, the types of support offered, and the benefits and risks.

As a result of this information need, we developed a series of information sheets, for people living with health conditions and health professionals. The information sheets describe:

  • The types of support offered, and benefits for people living with health conditions
  • How to find the best online health forum to meet your needs
  • Safe sharing practices
  • Potential risks

We aim to enable people to make informed choices about online health forums.

We thank Breast Cancer Care, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, and the Weston Park Cancer Information and Support Centre Patient Involvement group for input and support.

We are also happy to send you paper copies in any quantity; please email: sarah.hargreaves@sheffield.ac.uk
