Welcome to the Department of Accommodation & Commercial Services.

Accommodation & Commercial Services (ACS) are responsible for providing a huge range of essential services and facilities to staff, students and visitors across the University, including accommodation, welfare support, catering and hospitality, conferences and events, with an annual turnover of £36 million. Our international reputation for academic excellence attracts students and staff from all over the world. We provide accommodation and related services and support for over 6,000 students in our residences located at Ranmoor/Endcliffe and in the City. We also run a number of high quality bars and food outlets, as well as providing venues, hospitality and delivered catering for meetings, conferences and special events, such as weddings and graduations. We are proud to have been voted in the top five by the Times Higher Education for six years in a row for our student accommodation (2013-2018) - having retained the number one position for three years running. We were also awarded Best Student Housing 2018 in the higher education sector’s CUBO Awards for Sheffield’s Jonas Hotel, the first of its kind in the UK housing students and visitors alike. We couldn’t have reached these milestones without the dedication and commitment from our employees, as it is very much a team effort. We recognise and celebrate the importance of our employees in achieving these awards and we have several initiatives in place to develop and reward them.

Our Department has consistently been awarded the Investors in People standard, a national quality framework. We have a strong focus on customer service, holding the nationally recognised Customer First accreditation. Training and quality is the essence of our community and helps us to grow and expand with a team of dedicated and highly skilled people.

UNICUS

In addition to our work, an independent, wholly owned subsidiary company, UNICUS, was established in 2012 to develop a commercial proposition to enhance the offer to the University. UNICUS is exclusive to Commercial Services and operates a boutique hotel (Halifax Hall), a village store for the community, a high end restaurant (Inox Dine), seven retail outlets and a staffing agency. The budgeted turnover for 2018-19 for UNICUS is £6.7m and the company has a workforce of 155 contracted employees plus 245 casual workers.
