The University of Sheffield Careers Service celebrates success at the Student Employee of the Year awards 2014.
It’s time for Sheffield to celebrate as the winners have been announced at the Student Employee of the Year awards 2014 (SEOTY), organised by NASES (National Association of Student Employment Services).
Lewis Yates (BEng Civil Engineering Degree with Employment Experience) has been crowned the overall national winner of the ‘Student Employee of the Year 2014’ award. With over 700 nominations from nearly 60 institutions, Lewis has done himself and the University proud.
Aim of the award
The SEOTY awards aim to recognise and promote the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who combine part-time work with their study commitments.
With many University of Sheffield winners in the different categories, the Careers Service Jobshop held an awards ceremony on 12th June where the winners were congratulated and presented with their certificates. Next stop was the regional stage; seven students went through to the North East regional awards and an additional seven also received a highly commended certificate. Two employers also went through to the regional stage – one on campus and one employer off campus - and three employers also received highly commended certificates.
At regional level the results were astonishing with two national winners being announced from the University of Sheffield and one highly commended. The national ‘On Campus Above and Beyond’ ‘Student Employee of the Year 2014’ was Lewis Yates for his work in Development, Alumni Relations and Events (DARE) as an Alumni Fund Student Caller and also our very own Student Union Welcome Desk and Box Office who won ‘On Campus Employer of the Year’.
Lewis was a little star struck over winning the award and said;
‘Winning a national competition is a huge honour, and a massive surprise; I’m extremely grateful to my colleagues at the Alumni Fund for nominating me. Working part-time while in my final year of an engineering degree was really easy to manage seeing as I was working for the University. The staff were incredibly understanding about Uni workload, allowing me to work flexibly around deadlines.
The work itself was very rewarding, I had the chance to speak to real-life engineers; some of them retired, some just beginning their careers (many of them in fields I am hoping to work in) so I got the opportunity to gain many perspectives on the industry.
All in all, my part-time job was an overwhelmingly positive experience from which I learned a great deal. To be the winner of this award is icing on the cake- I can include this on my CV to showcase my work, this is definitely something I hope to build on throughout my career.’
