Sheffield Alumni announced as Graduate of the Year

Congratulations to Alumni Lucy Ashen who was recently announced as the “Graduate of the Year” at the New Civil Engineer Graduate and Apprentice awards held at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Lucy Ashen - Graduate of the Year

Lucy, a Sheffield MEng Civil Engineering graduate, now works for Stantec and this award recognises the work she has done to promote sustainability in her projects, as well as her contribution to Stantec's Developing Professional's Group (DPG) and STEM outreach work she has carried out in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The NCE Graduate & Apprentice Awards are designed to recognise and reward the most inspiring civil engineering graduates, apprentices and degree apprentices. This year the awards put the role the industry plays combating climate change under the spotlight as Glasgow’s COP26 takes centre stage this year. The winners were announced at an in-person presentation ceremony at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London.

Lucy went through a rigorous selection process which included a written application and a face-to-face interview with an expert judging panel where she expanded upon her vision for how industry can take a leadership role in tackling the climate crisis. She included examples of how she is actively trying to stimulate change through her project work and STEM activities; a large focus of this being the promotion of high-quality, vegetated sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) from the outset of the Hull living with water Project. Lucy explains that this was strongly linked to what she learnt at Sheffield in the Urban Drainage and SuDS modules with Virginia Stovin as well as her final year dissertation.

Lucy commented; “I’m extremely proud to be named graduate of the year and recognized for the progress I have made both on a personal and professional level. I’m delighted to be recognised for my ideas and experience addressing climate change and the work I have done to promote STEM careers.”

This is a fantastic achievement and we’re delighted to share in Lucy’s success as one of our Department of Civil and Structural Engineering family.
