The Department of Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering's teaching is underpinned by international leading research, ranked top 4 in the UK for research excellence, and offers excellent laboratories and facilities for students.  All undergraduate and postgraduate courses are accredited.

Over the last five years research activity in the Department has continued to expand, which enables high employability for students through research-led teaching.  The Department has always been strong in fundamental areas of civil engineering, such as structures and water, but civil and structural engineering is no longer just about the built environment above and below ground.  Civil engineers also have a responsibility to address emerging global engineering challenges.  The Department’s growing expertise in resilient infrastructure, sustainability and carbon-neutral construction, energy generation and storage, digital technologies, characterisation of new materials, and management of risk and hazards, shows a dedication and passion about making the world a better place and producing engineers who will build a better future.

University Teacher in Construction Management (part time 50%)

We are seeking to recruit an experienced engineer with teaching experience to help deliver on our MSc programme in Civil Engineering and Management, which includes delivery of modules and supervision of dissertation students.

The position would suit a Chartered Engineer who has experience of working in both the design consulting and contracting side of the construction industry. We are expecting experience in: design; project life cycles; construction project management; the fundamentals of contracts and programmes and communication and people skills. You should also have a portfolio of applicable case studies to use to give context.

You should have a real passion to deliver high quality teaching at all levels and openness to new ways of delivery and assessment.  You will be educated to degree level in Civil and Structural Engineering or a related discipline, or have equivalent experience.

Lecturer in Low Carbon Design

We are looking to recruit a Lecturer in Structural Engineering to help shape our taught programmes and research activity to address and take advantage of the future’s challenges. We wish to appoint a Structural Engineer with the vision and drive to help our department contribute to the UK Structural Engineers Declare Climate & Biodiversity Emergency campaign, to which our department is a signatory, and with a focus on Low Carbon Design. Your research background could be in timber, composites, glass, steel, LCA, structural analysis or design but whatever your experience we are looking for new ideas and approaches to Low Carbon Design to help shape and lead our structural engineering researchers and graduates to be at the forefront of the profession utilising their knowledge and skills to engineer a better future.

You should have a proven track record of publishing high quality journal papers, of delivering impact and the potential to generate research funding. You should also have a real passion to deliver high quality teaching at all levels and openness to new ways of delivery and assessment. You will be educated to degree level in Civil and Structural Engineering or a related discipline or have equivalent experience together with a PhD in a relevant subject area or have equivalent experience.

Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering

We are looking to recruit a Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering to help shape our taught programmes and research activity, and to address and take advantage of the future’s challenges. You will have the vision and drive to help our department contribute to the national and international agenda facing the geotechnical sector today. Your research could be focused on any area within the geotechnical discipline and be related to either numerical or physical investigative methods; but crucially we seek a talented individual who can relate their research vision to impact on key emerging challenges (i.e. infrastructure performance/resilience, adaptation of geotechnical systems for our evolving climate, low carbon development/management, decarbonisation of energy production, integration of digital technologies), to help shape and lead our geotechnical engineering activities, to be at the forefront of the profession and engineer a better future.

Lecturer in Concrete Technology

We are seeking to recruit a talented and ambitious Lecturer to join the highly successful Concrete research group within the Department.  You will contribute to the Department’s teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and contribute to research related to sustainable construction and automated casting. You will support the RAEng/Twintec Research Chair on Innovative and Sustainable Fibre Reinforced Concrete that aims to optimise the design of concrete by considering safety, sustainability, and Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA).

You should have a proven track record of publishing high quality journal papers, of delivering impact and the potential to generate research funding. You should also have a real passion to deliver high quality teaching at all levels and openness to new ways of delivery and assessment.  You will be educated to degree level in Civil and Structural Engineering or a related discipline, or have equivalent experience together with a PhD in a relevant subject area, or have equivalent experience.
