My teaching aims to bridge the gap between academia and engineering in practice. My industry experience means students get to experience large-scale projects in an industry context, providing important skills for employment.

Mr Paul hulbert

Paul joined the Department as a University Teacher in 2013, bringing over 20 years’ experience from the water industry working across feasibility studies, civil detail design, hydraulic design, design team coordination, subcontract preparation and Project Management. He is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Paul teaches BIM and 3D modeling alongside conceptual structural design from a qualitative point of view, to provide a fundamental understanding of how large projects work in real life. A large part of this is the 3rd year Integrated Design Project, which aims to simulate large-scale projects in an industry context. The project aims to encourage students to apply their prior fundamental engineering teaching to large, open-ended problems. This prepares graduates to enter the world of work by teaching them how to approach large, complex projects and conceptualise whole structures, while developing construction management and organisation skills.
