Ten reasons to study with us

Here at Sheffield, we're passionate about providing an outstanding engineering education. Our academic staff dedicate their professional lives to their research and the impact they hope to have on all our futures. This passion feeds directly into our teaching, which means if you choose Sheffield, you'll be taught by the best.

Your degree will be industry-relevant, making you highly employable, and ensuring you become the kind of engineer the world needs right now; forward-thinking, interdisciplinary, environmentally conscious, and capable of the kind of complex thinking our rapidly changing society needs.  Here are ten reasons to study with us:

1. We don't ask for a science A level.

Unlike lots of other civil engineering departments, you don't have to be studying a science A level subject to apply for our undergraduate courses. You need to be studying maths and two other subjects. Our 1st year teaching covers the basics you'll need. Visit our course pages for full entry requirement information.

2. We make employable engineers.

100% of our students went into graduate-level jobs or further study according to the latest Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey (2016/17).

3. We're one of the top 50 civil engineering departments in the world.

We're ranked 44th in the world and 5th in the UK according to the QS World University rankings by subject (2019).

4. We're the 9th best civil engineering department in the UK (Times).

We're 9th in the UK according to the Times University League Table (2019).

5. We're the 7th best civil engineering department in the UK (Complete University Guide)

We're 7th in the UK according to the Complete University Guide (2019).

6. Our research is world-leading.

We're in the top 4 in the UK for research excellence (Research Excellence Framework 2014).

7. Undergraduates get to take part in our unique, award-winning Integrated Design Project.

Student feedback consistently rates this 3rd year project, which mimics the design process in industry, as the best and most valuable part of their course.

8. Undergraduates get to study in the Diamond.

This £81 interdisciplinary teaching building gives students the chance to get hands-on learning in state of the art labs, develop skills on industrial scale equipment, and study in over a thousand study spaces.

9. We're international, diverse and welcoming.

With 25% female students in our undergraduate cohorts, and 20% of our academic staff women, there's a stronger gender balance here than in many other engineering departments. We also have staff and students from over 40 countries, so no matter what your background, you'll feel welcome.

10. We make great engineers.

Our teaching provides you with the skills to to create iconic structures and buildings of the future. For example, our graduate, Dr John Roberts is known as one of Britain’s top structural engineers. He’s worked on the London Eye and the British Airways i360 in Brighton.
