Kate Pickett is a Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York, and the University's Research Champion for Justice and Equality. She is a Fellow of the RSA and of the UK Faculty of Public Health, and co-founder and trustee of The Equality Trust. Her research focuses on the social determinants of health and health inequalities, with a particular interest in child development. She is co-author, with Richard Wilkinson, of The Spirit Level chosen as one of the Top Ten Books of the Decade by the New Statesman, winner of Publication of the Year by the Political Studies Association and translated into 23 languages. In their recent book, The Inner Level, they show the impact inequality has on individuals: affecting how we think, feel and behave. It demonstrates that societies based on fundamental equalities, sharing and reciprocity generate much higher levels of well-being.
