Defining manufacturability
With increasing material costs and scarcity in alloy production, it becomes increasingly important to be able to optimise every stage of the manufacturing process.

Three core issues have been identified in the industry:
- In-situ measurement of alloy properties during processing, to inform the process being used, and reduce waste.
- Replacement of ‘traditional alloys’ with specifically designed materials, each optimised for a given end use.
- Waste recycling of high-value materials to ‘close the loop’ in material supply chains.
The DARE project aimed to develop new alloys with these understandings, to define and validate a ‘Process Sustainability Index’ for new alloys that can optimise their use.
