Facilities and services

The Faculty of Science is home to a variety of world class facilities for teaching and research across the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and psychology. You can find information on some of these facilities below, including information on how to access them as a collaborator or external customer who might benefit from our expertise.

Science research facilities at the University of Sheffield: A-Z

Arthur Willis Environment Centre

AWEC has a state of the art 'Grodome' in which 16 discrete units simulate plant growth conditions for different regions around the globe. It contains dedicated laboratory, office and meeting room space to enable researchers to investigate the wide variety of environmental challenges facing the planet.

Bateson Centre Zebrafish Facility

Zebrafish are the pre-eminent non-mammalian vertebrate species for modelling human disease processes. The zebrafish aquarium is one the largest in Europe, with capacity for 108,000 fish and a dedicated team who run the facility and breeding programmes to the highest standards.

Centre for Chemical Instrumental Analysis and Services

The Department of Chemistry has a wide range of analytical equipment for external companies to access, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, glass blowing, inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy, microanalytical, NMR, X-ray, Differential scanning calorimetry, polarimetry and sample packaging.

Mass Spectrometry Centre

The Faculty of Science Mass Spectrometry Centre together with the biOMICS Facility uses state-of-the art instrumentation for the mass analysis of a wide range of complex mixtures and pure molecules for proteome profiling, phosphoproteomics, affinity-purification mass spectrometry and metabolomics.

Sheffield Solar

Sheffield Solar's microgen database collects data from over 6,000 UK installations. Monthly data is available online for domestic users, industry and policy makers. The centre has a test facility that demonstrates different PV technology online, and new and emerging technology can be tested alongside established products.

Sir David Read Controlled Environment Facility

This world-leading climate controlled plant growth facility is made up of 32 individual units that are independently able to simulate the majority of terrestrial environments from tropical to Polar regions as well as past and future global atmospheric environments including elevated and sub-ambient CO2.

Statistical Services Unit

The SSU provides statistical consultancy to a range of clients, supported by technical and practical experience and a commitment to quality. The Unit's expertise includes planning statistical investigations, analysis and reporting of data, web-based survey design and analysis, expert statistical review and training workshops.

The Wolfson Light Microscopy Facility

The Light Microscopy Facility offers a range of microscopes, including confocal (scanning and spinning disc), widefield and deconvolution microscopes. There are also two super-resolution light microscopes, one based on Structured Illumination, another on Localisation microscopy and a light sheet microscope.
