Collins Aerospace Actuation Systems is a global leader in the design, manufacture and support of actuation systems for large commercial, regional, business and military aircraft, as well as for helicopters and precision weapons. In order to reduce workpiece material scrappage rates and abrasive tool dressing times, Collins are keen to adopt a new and innovative method for monitoring the condition of their grinding wheels, in-process, as means to reduce production times and increase tool life.
My research aims to optimise Collins' abrasive machining processes by developing a novel vision system that can quantify abrasive tool condition, in-process, removing the need to stop machining operations and take the tool off machine.
The IDC's EngD programme has offered me a number of benefits over typical engineering graduate schemes. Not only has it provided me with extensive industry exposure, but it has also enabled me to expand my skillset to become a more well-rounded engineer. This has been valuable for me, having come from a materials science background, as I felt my engineering skills were lacking following my undergraduate university studies.
