Department Safety Officer completes Portuguese ironman triathlon

Congratulations to Ian Hammond our Departmental Safety Officer on completing the full distance Ironman Triathlon in Cascais, Portugal.

Ian Hammond, ironman

Starting on Cascais beach at 8am and finishing back there at 10pm some 14 hours later, the event involved a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run – an amazing 140.6 miles in total!

Ian’s no newcomer to endurance events and has previously taken part in half distance events but this is the first full ironman event he’s completed.  The Pandemic made training difficult, partly because of the uncertainty as to whether the event would take place this year after being cancelled in 2020, but Ian was dedicated to his cause and his ‘real’ training started over 6 months before the race date.

Competing alongside friends and with his family there to support and cheer him on, Ian battled against the physical and mental challenges to successfully reach the finish line.  He says he’s promised not to do another, but is already keen for a new challenge!

Congratulations on an amazing achievement Ian – we’re all in awe!
