The inclusion of human factors into the design of products, jobs or systems means that they can be optimised to the desired users to the benefit of all. Therefore this course aims to explore human factors and their value within the design process.

Module Description

The module is designed to give students an introduction to human factors and user-centred design and how they are used within the design process (alongside engineering analysis, manufacturing considerations, marketing etc.). The module concentrates on developing an understanding of how populations are characterised and how that influences design decisions. It gives an overview of the theory and practices surrounding design with humans before asking students to apply those theories in a series of case studies. The module gives students an opportunity to work within a team and learn from peers as they tackle the case studies.

Assessment Methods

  • 50% Coursework: In groups, students will present human factors considerations for a product type and target population. Then develop and carry out a focus group simulation for that product, the assessment will include the presentation, a group report on the focus group plan and a reflection of the success of the focus group.
  • 50% Open Book Exam: using case study material students will be examined on the course material.

Module Aims

  • Provide a broad overview of the theory and practice with respect to human characteristics and capabilities in design.
  • Introduce the background and fundamental principles of user-centered design.
  • Establish the circumstances in which new human centered designs are generated and the design tools available to support the process, theories would include co-design, include design, perceived value.

International Merit Scholarships
