Fees and funding for intercalated BSc degrees

Tuition fees

Tuition fees for studying an intercalated BSc degree vary depending on your fee status and when you started your undergraduate Medicine course.

Contact the student fees team for further information.

Intercalation during the third or fourth year of study

Students receiving a student loan for tuition and/or maintenance can apply for this funding for the intercalated year on the same basis that they are currently in receipt of it.

If you are claiming a student loan for the first time, please ensure you apply for it in good time as it can take several weeks for you to be assessed.

Intercalation during the fifth year of study

Students entering their fifth year of study at the start of the course in August should be eligible to have their tuition fees for the year paid by NHS bursaries. Students can also apply for maintenance support from the NHS and receive a reduced maintenance loan from Student Finance.

Contact the student fees team for further information.

NHS bursaries will not cover funding for students who are in their third or fourth year of study.

Other sources of funding

The Medical School has an excellent track record in supporting students to secure funding from external bodies.

Contact The Medical School for more information.

Fees and funding for intercalated masters degrees

Tuition fees

Tuition fees for studying a masters programme vary by course and your fee status.

Scholarships

Scholarships may be available for some masters courses, please check with the individual course prospectus for more information.

Alumni discount

Sheffield medical students intercalating to masters may be eligible for an alumni discount off the masters course tuition fee.

Intercalation to a masters in the fourth year of study

Home students may be eligible to apply for a postgraduate masters loan.

Please be aware that the postgraduate loan is treated separately to any undergraduate loan you may have.  This means that the repayment terms and conditions that you agree to for the postgraduate loan (eg. repayment threshold, when you enter the repayment period etc.) apply from the point of graduating from your intercalated masters degree.

You cannot apply for an undergraduate loan for either tuition fees or maintenance costs.

Intercalation to a masters in the fifth year of study

Home students cannot apply for a postgraduate loan. Instead, home students can apply to NHS Bursaries to fund the tuition fee up to the standard undergraduate tuition fee rate for the year. There is also a small, non-means tested bursary available from NHS Bursaries for students who entered medicine from 2012-13.

You cannot apply for an undergraduate loan for either tuition fees or maintenance costs.
