Official opening of the POLARIS hyperpolarised MRI lung imaging centre

The official opening of the Pulmonary, Lung and Respiratory lmaging Sheffield (POLARIS) hyperpolarised MRI lung imaging centre took place on 17 January 2018. The event included tours of the imaging facility and laboratories, which are funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and British Heart Foundation (BHF).

The Academic Unit of Radiology in the University of Sheffield's Department of lnfection, Immunity & Cardiovascular Disease is one of the key research groups contributing to lnsigneo. Using state-of-the-art techniques developed in Sheffield by the POLARIS project, which is led by Professor Jim Wild, the team creates functional images of the lungs in patients affected by conditions such as cystic fibrosis, emphysema, pulmonary hypertension asthma and complications from smoking. Collaborating with clinicians in Sheffield and across the UK, they have led the way in translating these techniques into the clinic.
