German Project Higher Advanced 2 (MLT322B)

This unit aims to enable students at a 'Higher Advanced' level of competence in the language to engage critically and autonomously with a specialised topic normally closely related to their main field of study.

  • Pre-requisite: MLT314, A level + 1 year or stay abroad, CEF B2+
  • Co-requisite: On consultation with the Language Co-ordinator only.
  • Availability: Students of the University of Sheffield taking the module for credits.

  • Contact times: One-hour weekly tutorial for 11 weeks, starting in Week 2 of the semester.

Students who take this module consolidate the acquisition of subject-specific terminology and discourse, as well as develop advanced research skills. Working under regular supervision, students will complete a written portfolio (2,500 words) and prepare a structured oral presentation summarizing their research for a specialist audience and demonstrating their acquisition of relevant academic and linguistic skills.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • perform at Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • source and analyse specialist information, distinguishing fact from opinion and main ideas from supporting detail
  • present findings in speech and writing in the target language, using a formal register and, where appropriate, subject-specific language
  • plan and manage a project involving individual research.
