Mathematical and Physical Science scholarships

If a project does not come with funding attached, that does not mean that there is no funding available. Find out what funding opportunities are available to you.

Being offered a place and being offered funding are two separate things. It is a good idea to contact the supervisor of any PhD project you want to apply for before you submit your application, as they may also be able to advise you on sources of funding.

We also accept applications from applicants who are applying for funding separately, or have funding in place already – please include any details in your application form.

Other scholarships from the University of Sheffield and external sources are available for new PhD students to help cover tuition fees and sometimes living expenses.

EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Awards

Each year, we have a limited number of studentships available from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

These studentships cover home tuition fees, a stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £19,237 in the 2024 academic year) and a Research Training and Support Grant of £4,500 to cover research expenses throughout the project registration.

Overseas candidates are welcome to apply and up to 30% of studentships could be awarded to outstanding international applicants. The University of Sheffield will cover the overseas tuition fee difference to these excellent candidates.

Please note that the award does not cover funding for costs related to relocation to the UK, such as visa fees or the NHS surcharge.
