Research interests

Two of the most pressing problems in modern particle physics are the nature of Dark Matter comprising about 85% of the matter of the Universe and the fine tuning problem of the Standard Model.

The solution to both of these problems may lay with physics theories such as Supersymmetry that can be experimentally tested studying the debris from proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, the largest such facility in the world.

  • Team leader of the Sheffield ATLAS group
  • Leverhulme Research Fellow (2015-16)
  • Third generation Supersymmetry searches at the Large Hadron Collider

The ATLAS experiment and me

The ATLAS experiment at the LHC is a large collaboration, and it is only thanks to great teamwork that we can advance human knowledge and understand the world of the very small.

Among the things I do or did:

  • Coordinator of the ATLAS upgrade software (2014-16)
  • Chairman of the ATLAS authorship committee (2015-16)
  • Member of the ATLAS publication committee (2013-15)
  • Chairperson of the physics and software validation group (2005-10)
  • Convener of the Supersymmetry working group (2007-09)

In the next few years I plan to concentrate on the searches for supersymmetry in final states with bottom- and top-quarks and missing transverse energy.

I will work with students and postdocs thanks to a European Research Council grant. Lots of interesting papers will come using the latest data from the LHC.

I also plan to continue to work on the ATLAS software, which is the main tool we all use to do our research.
