PhD training in particle physics

We provide a comprehensive training programme for University of Sheffield PhD students in particle physics.

During the first year students will typically complete the following activities:

  • 100 hours of teaching and independent learning focusing on Quantum field theory, Quantum Electrodynamics, the Standard Model, detector physics and software tools (ROOT, GEANT4, etc.)
  • A one-week residential school on neutrino physics
  • A two-week residential school on Particle Physics (RAL summery school)
  • Give a presentation at a Particle Physics and Particle Astrophysics Group event in the Spring
  • Prepare a poster for the Institute of Physics meeting before Easter
  • Prepare a first-year report and pass a viva

The timetable of the lectures and other events is published here (University of Sheffield access only).
