Course description

This course is the same as the MEng Civil Engineering in years one and two. The second half of the course includes structural engineering modules such as bridge engineering, multi-storey building design, sustainability and geotechnics.

You'll have the chance to arrange a year working in an engineering company between years three and four. This will put your academic studies into context, improve your skills and enhance your employment prospects.

You'll also work on an integrated design project to design an entire eco-town or urban regeneration site, taking the lead on the project's structural aspects. The project is demanding. It takes initiative, motivation and careful planning. Your final year includes an individual project and advanced structural modules.

  • Accredited by the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
  • Accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
  • Accredited by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
  • Accredited by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Our partner companies contribute to teaching through lectures, design classes, projects and site visits. We work with leading consultants, contractors and specialist civil engineering companies to provide industrial opportunities for a number of students each year. We also have industrial tutors and professionals who mentor our first-year students.

You'll be taught in The Diamond (pictured), one of the best teaching spaces in the UK. The building contains state-of-the-art teaching and lab facilities, and uses cutting-edge, industry-standard equipment.

All our courses are accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers.

A four-year MEng meets all the academic requirements of Chartered Engineer status. If you take the three-year BEng Civil Engineering, you will have to complete some further learning before you can qualify as a Chartered Engineer.

There are four open days every year, usually in June, July, September and October. You can talk to staff and students, tour the campus and see inside the accommodation.

If we offer you a place on a course, you'll be invited to a department open day. Civil and Structural Engineering open days are held between December and March.
