SABRE: Hypertonic Saline in Acute Bronchiolitis: A Randomised Controlled Trial and Economic Evaluation

The SABRE study was a randomised controlled trial and economic evaluation of hypertonic saline in acute bronchiolitis in babies which took place in NHS hospitals around the United Kingdom.

Acute bronchiolitis is the commonest cause of hospitalisation in infancy and childhood: 1-3% of all infants are admitted to hospital during their first winter. A virus infects the lungs, and the airways become blocked, leading to breathing difficulties, particularly in those under 6 months of age. Current treatment (after 40 years of research) involves supportive care and oxygen. The SABRE trial aimed to determine if giving babies nebulised hypertonic saline (salt water sprayed as a mist so they can breath it in) would reduce symptoms and distress for babies, parents and carers as well as reducing the length of time in hospital.

The study recruited patients during winter 2011/12, winter 2012/13 and from October 2013 to December 2013.
