In late January the University of Sheffield’s recently-opened Centre for Korean Studies ran a workshop for PhD students and early career scholars on channels for sharing their research beyond academia.

The workshop was funded by the Academy of Korean Studies and was aimed at improving the potential for Korean Studies research to generate a positive impact on wider society.

Twelve Korean Studies scholars from all over the UK took part in sessions looking at topics including working with the media, showcasing research and expertise in short-form writing online, and engaging with creative industries, civil society and government.

The sessions were led by experienced East Asian Studies academics with strong track records of engagement with a wide variety of external stakeholders. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their own research and to consider the opportunities available to develop their own external engagement projects.

The workshop provided an important first step in improving the capacity of Korean Studies researchers to contribute to the impact of research in their respective disciplines, while also helping build a stronger network of Korean Studies scholars across the UK.
