FRENCH LANGUAGE post-A-Level
MDL1010: This module forms part of a language studies programme designed to develop the core skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. It aims to develop a firm grasp of the syntactical and lexical structure of French, with an appreciation of some of the stylistic problems involved in translating from and into French and in writing compositions in French. The course demands a considerable amount of oral and written work.
Credits: 20 credits
Prerequisites: A-Level French or equivalent
Semester: Full year
Timetable: 3 contact hours per week. Grammar classes run on Thursdays at 2 in Arts Tower Lecture Theatre 3 for all students. You will also have two small-group classes each week (Monday 12 & Thursday at 1 or Monday at 10 & Thursday at 5 or Wednesday at 12 & Thursday at 10).
Assessment: Oral exam (25%), coursework (25%), exam (50%).
HISTORY AND CULTURE post-A-level
MDL107: Understanding Modern France: this module introduces students to modern French and Francophone history, culture, and society. This course offers a critical survey of key historical, political, social, and cultural developments in France and other Francophone societies. You will study a corpus of different texts, learning how they relate to the historical, political, societal, and cultural contexts in which they were produced and received. You will be introduced to different critical languages and techniques in order to analyse the texts effectively, providing you with the essential critical skills and knowledge base for your degree studies in French. The module will be taught and assessed in English but primary source materials will mostly be in French.
Credits: 20 credits
Prerequisites: A-Level French or equivalent
Semester: Full year
Timetable: Classes run on Mondays at 9 in Diamond lecture theatre 8, and on Wednesdays at 11 in Hicks Building room B08. Lectures/Seminars
Assessment: Exam at the end of semester 1; essay at the end of semester 2.
FRENCH LANGUAGE beginners and faux débutants
MDL1003: You will take four hours of interactive language classes per week conducted in a mixture of French and English, which provide you with a solid grounding in speaking, listening, writing and reading skills. You will also have a structured programme of independent study and regular feedback on your progress and work.

Semester: Full year
Timetable: 4 contact hours per week. Monday at 5 in Jessop West seminar room 8, Tuesday at 12 in Hicks F30, Thursday at 12 in 38 Mappin Street room 104, and Thursday at 4 in 38 Mappin Street room 201.

An optional module available to both beginners and post-A-level students
MDL115 French Critical Contexts: This module focusses on key French texts (with `text' taken in its largest sense of book, film, art work, piece of music, cultural product, etc). Each text will form the basis for a close reading, followed by analyses using French cultural, historical, literary and critical theory approaches as well as adaptations into other media (such as film, art and music) where appropriate. The module will be taught and assessed in English, but the materials will be made available in both French and English.
