Who we are and what we do

Campaigns and Alumni Relations (CAR) is the department responsible for fundraising and graduate engagement at the University of Sheffield.

We raise philanthropic gifts which benefit the University in a variety of ways - from supporting students in financial need to powering research that’s bringing about real change across society. We also build lifelong relationships with our 330,000 alumni through a range of impactful communications and memorable events.

Through this work, we help graduates and supporters feel connected with Sheffield, inspiring them to remain active members of the University community no matter where they are in the world.

Realising the University’s vision for philanthropy

A key focus of CAR's current work is Forged in Sheffield, Raising the Future, the University of Sheffield's first major fundraising campaign.  We have ambitious targets to increase engagement with our graduate and supporter communities, as well as raising more from philanthropy.

Teamwork in action: CAR’s achievements

CAR is a dynamic, collaborative and supportive environment to work in, with colleagues committed to achieving shared goals. Some of our recent successes include:

  • More students than ever are receiving a scholarship
Over 900 students from low-income, disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds are receiving a donor-funded scholarship thanks to CAR's fundraising. This financial support is changing lives - improving access to higher education, helping students stay the course once they’re here, and giving them the opportunity to enjoy a rounded university experience that wouldn't otherwise be available to them.
  • Catalysing game-changing research
From new treatments for Parkinson’s disease and gene therapy innovations to long-term ecological studies into the impact of climate change on wildlife, CAR's fundraising helps drive important research which is making a difference across society.
  • Inspiring the next generation
Our sector-leading alumni volunteering programme inspires students about where a Sheffield degree can lead. From mentoring and masterclasses to networking events and company visits, this vital work is helping students to achieve their full potential after graduation and beyond.

I've worked in CAR for more than nine years in a number of different roles. I know my skills and knowledge are appreciated and I can see how the support I've had to develop hasn't only benefitted me, but the University too. The people here are some of the most ambitious and hardworking people I know. The work we do is incredibly motivating and feeds in to so many different areas of the University. There's always something new and inspiring to learn.

There's a really encouraging and respectful working environment in CAR. Everyone has the opportunity to be heard, get involved and develop in their role. It helps that we're all working towards the same goal, so all successes are celebrated and recognised - not just in individual teams, but across the department.

The sense of community is what makes the University of Sheffield such a special place to work. We’re opening doors for students and staff from all backgrounds. Working in CAR gives me the opportunity to encourage others to make donations to power these talented people.
