Arriving at the department

You will have booked to visit us 10am to 12:30pm or 1:30pm to 4pm on your offer holder day. Please arrive in good time for the start of your booked session, as we'll need to scan the QR code from your booking to register you.

Your arrival location is: The Diamond, Work Room 2. You can view this on our interactive campus map, and there will also be lots of open day staff and ambassadors around campus to assist you.

If you arrive late for your booked session, please report to the general information stand on the Students’ Union concourse, where event staff will be able to help.

When booking, you'll be able to reserve a place for yourself and one guest at the department activities. To ensure safe venue capacities, the department will be unable to accommodate any additional unbooked visitors.

However, you're welcome to bring additional guests to accompany you on the day, and we would encourage these guests to take part in our range of central exhibitions and tours while the department activities are running.

Activities

You'll take part in two activities related to your chosen course to give you a real taste of what it's like to be a student at Sheffield.

We run a range of activities on our applicant days and the below examples will give you an insight into what you could be doing on the day.

Lab Activity

You'll undertake a hands-on activity in one of our well-equipped undergraduate teaching laboratories. Putting what you learn into practice is a key element of the course here at Sheffield and this will give a flavour of that, interacting with our technical teaching staff and current undergraduate students.

ChemEng Challenge

Design is at the heart of chemical engineering. In the ChemEng Challenge you’ll work in teams with other Chemical Engineering offer holders to design a real-life chemical process. This will give you a taster of what we'll teach you here in Sheffield and the Design Projects you'll do as part of your course. It also highlights how you could use the skills that you gain on your course in industry after you graduate.

We use the ChemEng Challenge to assess your problem-solving skills. This allows us to give fuller consideration to your application beyond your results and personal statement in case your grades fall slightly below your offer.

Parents and supporters tour

While you are taking part in activities, parents/supporters will receive a tour of the school and our facilities. They'll also get a chance to speak to current students and staff about the exciting opportunities that are available to you and where a degree from Sheffield can lead.

Science and Engineering Foundation Year

If you are holding an offer for one of our courses with a Foundation Year, an information stand for the Foundation Year will be available just inside the Diamond's main entrance (off Leavygreave Road) from 12-2.30pm for you to find out more and ask any questions.
