Consolidating and extending the record of AEWE, their local weather impacts and weather system drivers

The temporal and spatial complexity and high variability of Antarctic meteorological extremes (e.g. temperature and precipitation) is also due to their strong association with weather system drivers such as blocking, cyclones, and atmospheric rivers (ARs), and combinations of these.  In this workpackage we will provide a comprehensive data archive of the record of extreme weather events, their potential weather system drivers, and the local weather impact of these extreme events to feed forward into the other WPs.

We will firstly  develop a comprehensive database of the impacts of AEWE on temperature, precipitation and wind for targeted ice shelves.  For this we will use high-resolution regional climate model hindcasts, as well as observations from stations and automatic weather stations, and satellite data.  

We will then identify and categorise the weather system drivers, and then use this to identify the roles of the weather system drivers in causing the weather and sea-ice impacts  their potential weather system drivers, and the local climate impact of these extreme events to feed forward into the other workpackages.
