Mauerfall: Two special events

The Berlin Wall was breached on 9 November 1989, thirty years ago. This is what we did in Germanic Studies.

Peter Thompson

In Germanic Studies we organised two events to commemorate the Fall of the Berlin Wall thirty years ago.

Dr Peter Thompson gave a fascinating and wide-ranging lecture on "The GDR, Class and the Primacy of Politics" to a packed audience of undergraduates, guests, postgraduates and colleagues, with a lively discussion afterwards.

The evening continued with a multi-media presentation in the Students' Union, organised by the Deutscher Verein, our student society, with archive footage, personal testimonies, poems and extracts from autobiographies performed by students and staff.
