From 1st June 2015, Prof. Jean Grugel will be at the Open University, and can be contacted via jean.grugel@open.ac.uk. Jean is a Professor of International Development in the Department of Geography. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS). She acted as editor of the Bulletin of Latin American Research for many years and is on the editorial board of Global Governance, the Latin American journal Pensamiento Propio and the Spanish journal CIDOB d’Afers Internacionals. She has held a range of grants from the ESRC and other funders.
Research Interests
Her research interests cross two broad and over-lapping fields: the political economy of development and the politics of citizenship, human rights and democratization. Her fieldwork draws mainly on Latin America, although she has also carried out primary in Europe and the UK and is keenly interested in comparative research. Jean has held visiting positions in a number of universities in Europe and Latin America, including the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, FLACSO Argentina and the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. She currently works closely with colleagues in the University of Lund, Sweden, the Fundação João Pinheiro, Minas Gerais, Brazil and the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals, Barcelona.
She has also acted as an independent expert witness on nationalization of natural resources in Latin America, evaluated European Commission policies on children’s rights, acted as an advisor the European Commission on aid policies, and worked with NGOs in Argentina and Uruguay on the implementation of children’s rights. She was also trustee of the children’s charity, Childhope UK.
