What they can help with

Local pharmacies can help with a number of things, including:

  • Advice and treatment for common health problems (eg via Pharmacy First)
  • Advice about medicines
  • Disposing of old medicines
  • Help with new medicines

Some can also help with Emergency contraception, Contraceptive pills (non-emergency), blood pressure checks and more.

You can go to your local pharmacy for advice about most health or medical-related queries. If they can’t help, they will refer you to the most appropriate service.

Visit How pharmacies can help for more information.

Pharmacy First

This scheme enables local pharmacies to offer advice and treatment for common health problems. It also allows them to issue prescriptions without you needing to see a GP first.

Conditions they can treat and prescribe medication for include:

  • earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
  • impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
  • infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
  • shingles (aged 18 years and over)
  • sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
  • sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
  • urinary tract infections or UTIs (women aged 16 to 64 years)

You can go directly to your local pharmacy for advice about any of these, and do not need to be referred by UHS.
