I also really enjoy the freedom of the degree. I am taking an unrestricted module in German, that has enabled me to continue practising the language and not lose the skills I have built up over the years, and so I am incredibly grateful that Sheffield offers this.

Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?

I wanted university to be a completely new experience that took me outside of my comfort zone and so I sought a university that was far away, and completely fell in love with Sheffield after attending an open day.

The combination of city life with plenty of green spaces means you get the best of both worlds at Sheffield - all on your doorstep.

What do you particularly enjoy about your degree?

The breadth in the first year is extremely useful to get a good sense of so many aspects of history. I think this is invaluable in the first year to find out which aspects you love the most to put you in the best position to choose where to specialise further along the course.

I also really enjoy the freedom of the degree. I am taking an unrestricted module in German, that has enabled me to continue practising the language and not lose the skills I have built up over the years, and so I am incredibly grateful that Sheffield offers this.

What are you studying this year? Are there any modules that you've particularly enjoyed?

I am particularly enjoying HST 112 Paths: from Antiquity to Modernity. I feel it is an excellent module for the transition to university level.

Its questioning of seemingly concrete concepts such as 'modernity' and the focus on periodisation makes you think much more deeply about history as a whole, reconsidering so much you might have previously taken as 'factual': epitomising what university is all about.

The HST 120 History Workshop module meanwhile ensures you have all the key skills for the course. Overall, the modules are both highly engaging and prepare you comprehensively for the course.

What do you like about the University and living in Sheffield?

There is such a great blend of new and old architecture within the university and more broadly across Sheffield. As well as the convenience of the university being so near the city centre, the excellent transport links make the beautiful Peak District incredibly straightforward and quick to reach, so that overall it has a little bit of everything!

Would you recommend studying at Sheffield to a friend?

Without a doubt - it has been such a welcoming city and the course has been fascinating.
