History BA

Be inspired to explore and excel while being taught and supported by internationally recognised experts. You’ll develop expertise working with historical sources and think about how we study the past, applying this to an exciting and expansive range of topics - from the ancient world to the modern day and encompassing the history of Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Dual degrees

Dual honours degrees allow you to combine your study of history with another complementary subject. You will normally spend an equal amount of time and credits in each subject.

Major/Minor option

On many of our dual degrees, you can also choose to specialise more in one subject, by dividing your degree so that one-third (40 credits) is the minor subject and two-thirds (80 credits) are the major subject.

You do not need to decide before arriving in Sheffield, and have the option to change the major/minor balance or switch back to a 50:50 split when choosing your modules for each year of the degree.

Please note that this option is not available for dual degrees with Politics, Japanese and Chinese.

Chinese Studies and History BA

This is a balanced course that develops your Chinese language skills and historical knowledge. History modules are designed to complement your Chinese studies. They cover various political, social and cultural themes. You'll also spend part of your degree studying in a Chinese-speaking society.

English and History BA

The combination of English and History uniquely positions you to be able to interrogate a variety of literary texts (including film, theatre, poetry and prose) and place them within their historical, social and political contexts. Both departments offer modules that explore literary and historical cultures from the medieval period up until the contemporary moment. This course is available with either an English Literature or an English Language pathway.

Japanese Studies and History BA

History and Music BA

Studying both history and music will give you a firm grasp of both subjects. Music modules cover seven areas: performance, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, music psychology, musical industries, and music technology. History modules cover past societies from the ancient through to the modern period and explore political, social and cultural themes.
