Entry requirements for students from the USA

We have been welcoming students from the USA for many years and our staff are very familiar with the American education system and qualifications.

High entrance requirements for our degree programmes at Sheffield reflect the quality of the University.

Entry requirements

The University of Sheffield Science and Engineering Foundation Programme

Holders of an accredited US High School Diploma, with a high overall GPA and high grades in Maths and Physics will be considered for direct admission to the Science and Engineering Foundation programme

Applicants must also achieve high SAT scores (minimum Verbal 600, Math 600 and Written 600) or a high composite score in the ACT assessment

Undergraduate Programmes e.g. BSc, BA, BEng/ MEng

A variety of qualifications can be considered for direct admission to undergraduate bachelor degree programmes. All applications for undergraduate programmes should be made through UCAS.

US High School Diploma and Advanced Placement Tests/Subject SATS

Our undergraduate entry requirements for students from the USA are as follows:

1. High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.0+

2. PLUS either SAT at 1290+ (With a minimum of 620+ in Maths and 660+ in evidence-based reading and writing) (students that took the SATs previous to 2016 will require 1800+ (minimum 600 in each component)
OR ACT Composite Score of 27 or above.

3. PLUS either a minimum of three Advanced Placement Tests (APs) in relevant subjects, achieving grades 4 or 5
OR three SAT Subject Tests in relevant subjects at 1800+ (minimum 600 in each component)

The University will also consider a combination of Subject SATS and APs

A Level

Applicants with a minimum of 3 A levels will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

International Baccalaureate

International Baccalaureate diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

Other Qualifications

Applicants with one or more of the qualifications listed below will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

Holder of an Undergraduate Associated Degree at a two year Community College in the USA will be considered for direct admission to the first year of undergraduate programmes.

Applicants wishing to transfer from a regular undergraduate four year bachelors degree program in the USA will be considered for the first or second year of undergraduate degree programmes. Applicants will be required to have a high overall current GPA and high grades in relevant individual subject areas.

Postgraduate Taught Programmes e.g. MA, MSc

Holders of a good undergraduate four year bachelor degree and high grades in relevant individual subjects from an accredited university or college in the USA will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate diploma or masters programmes.

MBA

Holders of a good four year bachelor degree from an accredited university or college in the USA and at least 3 years' post-graduation work experience will be considered for direct admission to the MBA. Applicants must be at least 25 years old by the time the programme starts.

Applicants with a lower GPA and considerable work experience may be considered.

Postgraduate Research Programmes e.g. MPhil, PhD, PhD with Integrated Masters

Holders of a good four year bachelor degree and a good masters degree from an accredited university or college in the USA will be considered for direct admission to postgraduate research programmes.
