John Ball is currently working with the University of Sheffield as World Music Performer in Residence. John specialises in North Indian Classical Music, teaching and performing on tabla and santoor. He also brings to the department a huge amount of experience as a composer and performer in world music ensembles, collaborating with Western Classical, West African, Jazz, Folk and Pop Musicians. He has worked with a diverse range of artists including Juldeh Camara (BBC World Music Award Winner), Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley.
John is currently working with Indus, a dynamic and eclectic quartet who specialise in innovative arrangements and adaptations of traditional South Asian themes, and Rafiki Jazz, a Sheffield based 10-piece world music collective who play contemporary global dance music.
John is available to work with students in the following areas:-
- specialised one to one tuition in tabla and santoor, for students interested in exploring Indian music concepts of raga and tala
- exploring improvisation skills through Indian music rhythmic and melodic concepts, with individuals or ensembles. He has a particular interest in the adaptation of Indian music on to non-Indian instruments.
- composition exploring fusion/crossover, mix of musical genres
