Course description

If you don't have the usual scientific or mathematical background for an engineering degree, a foundation year is for you. After successfully completing the foundation year, which has modules in mathematics, physics and chemistry, you can start the MEng degree.

This course gives you a solid grounding in aerospace engineering. You'll learn how to communicate effectively with people from a wide range of engineering disciplines.

After a year of core study, you'll choose either the avionic systems or aeromechanics stream. In your final year, you'll work on a research project led by one of our world leading academics.

As well as more in-depth study, the MEng offers an Industrial Training Programme (ITP), with Siemens, GE and Rolls-Royce, giving you the opportunity to work on real-life engineering problems and network with key players in industry.

Our modules cover aero propulsion, aerodynamic design, aircraft dynamics and control, computational aerodynamics and project management. You'll complete a group project where you'll design, build and fly an unmanned aerial vehicle. Your study includes some experience of flight instrumentation and an individual investigative project of your choice.

All our students also take the Global Engineering Challenge, where teams of students work to solve engineering problems in developing countries. This is designed to develop you as a professional engineer and enhance your career prospects.

This MEng provides all the academic requirements needed for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

  • GCSE Maths grade 7/A, GCSE Science grade 6/B and successful completion of a Maths test are required for BTEC Extended Diploma, Access to HE Diploma and A Level applicants without A Level Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Please contact the department for more information.
  • A Level applicants with A Level Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Biology, GCSE Maths 6/B and Science grade 6/B are required.
  • Accepted GCSE science subjects include: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Core Science, Additional Science, Dual Science (BC), Triple Science (BCC)
  • General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted
  • You must demonstrate that your English is good enough for you to successfully complete your course. For this course we require: GCSE English Language at grade C/4; IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component; or an alternative acceptable English language qualification

Robotics with a Foundation Year BEng/MEng
Graduates of our Automatic Control and Systems Engineering degrees go on to become professional engineers in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, power generation and sustainable energy. They have worked with companies such as Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover and Thales. Our graduates can expect an above-average starting salary of £27,900 (DLHE, 2017).

During your degree you'll have plenty of opportunities to enhance your employability. You can choose to go on a placement in industry, either during the summer or as a year in industry. Or you could consider studying abroad, either for a full year, or as part of a summer school. We also have extracurricular projects where you can work with other engineering and science students to design and build rockets, submersible robots, autonomous payloads for satellites, rovers and more. You could also take part in a scheme for undergraduates where you work on research projects with academics over the summer period.

There are four open days every year, usually in June, July, September and October. You can talk to staff and students, tour the campus and see inside the accommodation.
