I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Statistics and Computer Science, followed by an MSc in Statistics from the University of Sheffield. On completion of my PhD entitled `Modelling familial cancer risk´ and awarded by the University of Manchester I accepted a post-doctoral position at the University of Cambridge. In 2001 I returned to Sheffield to join the Mathematical Modelling and Genetic Epidemiology Group based at the Medical School. In 2009 I moved to the Health Services Research section in ScHARR.

Research Interests

  • Statistical analysis of complex interventions
  • Epidemiology and risk prediction
  • Biomedical statistics and genetic epidemiology

Teaching Interests

My teaching activities include:

  • ScHARR Director of Learning and Teaching
  • Module lead for MAS6061: Statistical Methods in Epidemiology (MSc in Statistics with Medical Applications)

Professional Activities

  • Co-Lead of the NIHR Statistics Group
  • Fellow of Royal Statistical Society Medical Section
  • Independent statistician member on several data and safety monitoring committees

Current Projects

  • NIHR PDG RECOLLECT: to develop a fidelity indicator, identify mechanisms of action and characterise the casemix of Recovery Colleges. (PI: Professor Mike Slade) 2017 £100,882.
  • NIHR PHR A Randomised Controlled Trial Examining the Effect of LEGO (I-Socialise) (PI: Professor Barry Wright) 2017-2021 £607,286 (to UoS)
  • NIHR HTA ASPECT - A non inferiority randomised controlled trial comparing the clinical and cost effectiveness of single session treatment with multi-session CBT in children with specific phobias. (PI: Professor Barry Wright) 2016-2021 £822,000 (to UoS)
  • NIHR PHR Enhancing Social-Emotional Health and Wellbeing in the Early Years: A Community-based Randomised Controlled Trial (and Economic) Evaluation of the Incredible Years Infant and Toddler (0-2) Parenting Programmes (PI: Professor Tracey Bywater) 2015-2020 £1,870,484.
