I was awarded a National Institute of Health Research "Clinician Scientist" Fellowship in the 2011 competition, which currently entirely funds my current post and a research trial allied to the award (RESPITE). It was one of only 7 granted in England, across all medical disciplines, in that round. I brought the Fellowship to the School of Health and Related Research at Sheffield University, to pursue funded, national, multi-centre research of high quality. These studies are automatically eligible for adoption to the UK CRN “portfolio”.

National Institute of Health Research Panel experience:
I served a three year term with the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Program "Interventional Procedures Panel". This national body commissions new studies, reviews funding applications and sets NHS clinical research priorities on behalf of the NIHR. This appointment has given me unique insight into the process of grant application, prioritization funding allocation and governance.
Projects in progress:
I am co-applicant to a commissioned call from Health Technology Assessment for a trial of pre-operative smoking cessation in major thoracic surgery. This submission was prioritized for a “Full” application and will be deliberated in the coming weeks.
I am CI to an application to the Health Services & Delivery Research program for a national evaluation of the adoption of a complex surgical pathway intervention to facilitate “Enhanced Recovery in planned Caesarean Section”.
I am CI to a response to a recent HTA commissioned call for an evaluation of the effectiveness of Gabapentin in acute surgical pain. This “Expression of Interest” is sponsored by ScHARR CTRU. A full application has been requested
I am a reviewer to several peer review publications for manuscript submissions referred by editors for critical appraisal including:
IJOA (see above)
British Journal of Anaesthesia
British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Cochrane Collaborator, anaesthesia and reproductive health
Deputy Director NIAA Clinical Trials Network working group.
TSC Chair governing the PRISM Study, examining the effectiveness of Positive End Expiratory Pressure in the prevention of respiratory complications post-surgery.
